    I am walking because it is time to allow 10,000 refugees to live their lives with certainty, free from fear, free to build their lives with confidence. It is time for our politicians to do the right thing and make our country a better place by giving permanent visas to all refugees now.

    I am walking because I have grown up in Australia for more than 12 years, attended primary and secondary school and am now at university. I belong in this country, Australia is my home. Like myself there are 10,000 other people who are waiting for their stories to be heard, for permanent visas.

    I am walking because I have met many individuals who came to our country seeking asylum many years ago and yet are still unable to get on with their lives due to the restrictions of temporary visas. The ongoing inability to plan for the future, to reconnect with family overseas, to afford tertiary study or convince employers that they can commit to professional roles is cruel and unnecessary. Please give this cohort of individuals the ability to move forward with their lives.

    This cohort of people are being held back from increasingly valuable contributions to the life of our nation. I want permanent visas for this cohort of people.

    I want to see:

    • The fast track process abolished

    • The people in the legacy caseload to be given permanent visas.

    • To end indefinite detention and detention of asylum seekers on offshore islands.

    • To take responsibility for the remainder of refugees left in PNG.

    I would like to see permanent visas for all those still in limbo on temporary visas. Thousands of people have dealt with uncertainty for a decade, unable to feel settled, secure and wanted. This is cruel and unnecessary. They should be granted permanency now.

    I am walking in solidarity with refugees who face a severe and punitive regime if they attempt to seek safe haven in Australian. In decades past we have been compassionate and welcoming and refugees have given our country so much. Why have we changed?

    I want to see:

    • An end end to offshore processing

    • Prompt efforts to assess the legal rights of asylum seekers

    • An end to indefinite detention

    • Giving permanent visas to those who have been in limbo for years.

    Hi, my name is Barbara. I am walking to support the thousands still in limbo on temporary visas and to push for change. Permanent visas are required to plan a life here and feel secure. They are long overdue. Permanent visas now!

    What changes do you want to see?

    Operation Sovereign Borders needs to be dismantled. It is cruel and punitive. I would like to see offshore detention abolished. It treats asylum seekers as criminals when seeking asylum by any means of transport is entirely legal. The mantra of 'saving lives at sea' means little when lives are being destroyed on land.

    I would like to see permanent visas for all those still in limbo on temporary visas. Thousands of people have dealt with uncertainty for a decade, unable to feel settled, secure and wanted. This is cruel and unnecessary. They should be granted permanency now.

    I would like to see an end to the ban on refugees coming from Indonesia. Those who have been in limbo there as well as those on Nauru and in PNG should be brought here and given permanent visas so they can rebuild their lives.

    The ALP promised to be more compassionate. It is time to fulfil that promise.
